New look coaching group to oversee Amateurs in 2020

JUFC can today confirm that Neil Sherwin has been appointed as the first team coach of the Football West Amateur Premier Division squad for the 2020 season.

Joondalup United can today confirm that Neil Sherwin has been appointed as the first team coach of the Football West Amateur Premier Division squad for the 2020 season.

A JUFC member for ten years and an AFC/FFA C Licence coach, Sherwin was the player/coach of the reserves side that finished fifth in the top flight in 2019.

He was also the reserves captain as they claimed four league titles in a row between 2015 and 2018.

“Following the disappointing news this week that Ben Williams was unable to continue as the Amateur first team coach, we are very pleased to announce Neil Sherwin as his successor,” said JUFC President John Stone.

“It’s good to see Neil step up to this position as he has been involved in coaching the Amateur reserves for some time now and this promotion shows very much how we operate – natural progression from within and club development across all levels.

“Another senior player, James Green, will step into a coaching role for the first time as the first team assistant.”

Sherwin and Green have played together since 2007 when they were members of the Hamersley Rovers side that won the Amateur Cup.

Green was in the JUFC side that progressed to State League football before joining the current Amateur set up under outgoing coach Ben Williams and he was an integral part of the team that won the Division One title in 2018.

“I was delighted to be asked to take on the role and appreciate the backing of the club and the senior playing group,” said Sherwin.

“The Amateur Premier Division is a tough league, however we proved in the second half of last season that we can compete at this level.

“Neither myself or James are ready to hang up the boots just yet but we’re both looking forward to continuing Ben’s great work over the past seven years.

“We have a very strong squad in place but will be looking to add a few new faces to freshen things up and increase competition for places in the starting eleven.”

Preseason begins in the coming weeks with beach sessions at Mullaloo, the first of which takes place on Tuesday, December 10 at 6.15pm.

The balls will get moving at Beldon Park in early January and new players are welcome to attend all sessions.

JUFC are now taking expressions of interest for the vacant Amateur Premier Division reserves coach position; for more information about that role and the Amateur preseason, email amateur@jufc.com.au.
